As you may have read in the last update, last night, I presented in front of a large group of people for BURN Community Project Grant. The presentation went great and the crowd seemed to be very much into our project, but unfortunately, we did not win the money. At the end of the night, the grant was awarded to Unspoken Words, an awesome organization that offers art programs to homeless Chicago youth.
Nonetheless, it was a successful night for sure!! We got the word out to a new community of people and had the opportunity to network with other folks doing great things in Chicago. We may not have left with a check in our hands but we did make some connections that will improve the program and the Chicago Cycling community as whole.
Otherwise, where are we at? We have officially trained 8 people to become Bike Buddies in May and June had started pairing folks up to do the buddy rides. We’re still looking for folks who need the service though, so, if you are reading this, consider spreading the word and having your friends sign-up. We really just want to help, you know? Other than that, we’re in the process of scheduling a few more buddy training sessions in the near future. If you haven’t yet, fill out the form to become a Bike Buddy ASAP and we’ll get to you regarding our next training session.
Hope this post finds you well! Thanks for reading and all the support! Ride on.
We are excited to share that we have been chosen as a finalist to compete for a $1000 micro-grant from Burners Without Borders-Chicago and the Bold Urban Renaissance Network (BURN)! Currently, Bike Buddies has no budget; however this grant could allow us to really build up the organization and get our name out there!
But we need your help. To win the grant, 4 organizations (including Bike Buddies!) must give 10-minute presentations at a dinner on Wednesday, July 18. Everyone attending the dinner will then vote on which organization deserves to receive the grant. Obviously, the more people we can get to attend the dinner the better our chances are of winning the grant!
The event is on Wednesday, July 18. Doors open at 6:30, presentations begin at 7:30 and the winner is announced at 9:00. It only costs $5 and this gets you dinner and a vote! Everything is taking place at Eco, located at 2042 W. 21st Street. No RSVP is necessary; just show up!
So come out and support Chicago Bike Buddies!
Chicago Bike Buddies – Its finally happening! This all started back in November 2011 when I hosted a Brazilian CouchSurfer at my place. Michele, she was super cool, a cyclist and activist from São Paulo who also made a mean vegan cake. We talked a lot about cycling and she told me of the Bike Angels in Brazil. The program hooked nervous or hesitant riders up with experienced folks who would show them the ropes of riding in their city. Sound familiar?
After hearing about this program, I knew that I had to bring it to Chicago. We have a lot of cycling resources but we don’t have anything that connects the enthusiastic riders with the newbies. One-on-one connections, you know? Why not? So simple, right? So, I spread the word and got 2 awesome friends involved in the project (Alicia and Rachel) and we became a little team. And then after some good hours brainstorming, writing emails, meeting with folks, talking about it, posting on the Chainlink, etc etc, we finally got something started!
And by started, I mean, soon. We’ll start soon.
But we’re pumped as heck!!
